The place potentiometer as close to PIC as possible

Both 3mm or 5mm phototransistor are well done, also photo-resistor.

Almost any type 16*2 character-type LCD are well done.

The optional 6 pin ICSP socket is for in circuit programming, connect to Microchip's ICD2 programmer.

The Analog input RA3, is ADC input to digitize potentiometer. range =255*(3.3/9.8 to 8.3/9.8) = 86 to 216

The Analog input RA2, is ADC input to digitize voltage. two 1% resistor 39K & 2K divide the voltage to 2/41 = 4.87%. approximate (50/1024)
